Kindness Kit #5: Caring for Animals
Below you will find directions to complete your service project(s)!
Service Project #1: Make Dog Tug Toys for the Humane Society
Greenhill Humane Society in Eugene is accepting handmade dog toys. Here’s how!
Prep time: 15 minutes if cutting fleece into strips ahead of time
Cost: <$5, use fleece scraps you have or look for cheap fleece blankets
Duration: 15-30 minutes
Lesson(s) learned: we can serve animals too
Cut your fleece into 40" x 3" strips with the stretch on the long side. Each toy needs 3 strips so plan accordingly.
Line up 3 strips of fabric.
Start braiding near the center of the fabric strips.
When the braided part is centered between the loose fabrics, (aim to have an equal amount of loose fabric on both sides of the braid) stop, loop the braid back on itself, and match the loose fabrics on each side to braid it all the way to the end. You will have a loop at the top end of the tug toy.
To finish it off, tie a tight knot at the end of the rope, pulling the knot down until it doesn’t budge.
You may deliver your completed toys to Greenhill Humane Society at 88530 Green Hill Rd (North of W. 11th). As of now, they have a donation shed that people can place all donations in front of while we are all practicing social distancing. You will see it on your left when you drive up to the shelter entrance.
