Summer Service Bucket List

Summer Service Bucket List

It's summertime! Ok, not officially for a few weeks and kids here in Eugene still have a few days left of school but it's close enough that summer is on everyone's minds. What are your summer plans? You've probably already planned any big trips and registered for camps (although if you need a camp Aug 6-10 for your 3-6yo you should sign up for our Kindness Camp!); might even have the schedule for your favorite rec swims and library programs jotted down. Some families choose to plan a routine for each day and others plan to go with the flow of summer spontaneity. No matter what your summer plans are, do they include service? Depending on your family, it might mean working some random acts of kindness into your road trip or being extra nice to the other kids at camp or getting to know your neighbors with a summer BBQ or picking up litter on a hike or .... Summer provides so many opportunities for service!

Explaining Martin Luther King Day to the Kids

Explaining Martin Luther King Day to the Kids

Struggling with how to teach your kids about Martin Luther King Day? We've got lots of book ideas and a simple social experiment that even the littlest of kids will get a grasp of.

Kids want life to be fair. How many times has your kid said "but that's not fair!"? Too many to count? It's an easy concept for kids because it means a lot to them. It's also an easy way to teach about MLK Day.

Happy Helpers!

Happy Helpers!

School is almost starting around here and that also means that Happy Helpers will be back in session! We're testing out a new and improved version this school year with WEEKLY Happy Helpers. Maybe I'm the only one that gets mixed up as to which week is which ("Is it the 3rd Tues or the 2nd? Maybe the 4th? I'll have to check a calendar and see...") but having it weekly should be so much easier to remember. With a huge increase of time each month, we are limiting the program to one assisted living facility this year while we see how it goes. So, mark your calendars for Tuesdays at 10:30 at Waterford Grand. They'll always be on the website and facebook so check before you go if you don't have a school-age kid since we follow the local school district calendars.

My favorite part of Happy Helpers is the relationship these babes have with the old people who live at the assisted living facility where we hold Happy Helpers. Seeing big smiles on everyone's faces is so wonderful!

Happy Readers Help Out: 3 Books on Philanthropy

Happy (early) Independence Day! Now is a great time to chat with your kids about how blessed we are in the USA, with things we take for granted like clean running water, free schools, and peanut butter. At Little Hands Can events, we do a lot of good for our community and the world through helping with our own little hands but sometimes donating money is just the best way to help others, especially when the distance is far. Whether in big amounts or small, philanthropy can bless others. An easy way to get a discussion about philanthropy started with your kids is through reading books about it. Here are three books about philanthropy to get you started.
