Service Project: Donate books to your local library
Prep time: None
Duration: 30 minutes (this does not include the time to deliver the books)
Lesson(s) learned: Share your gently used books with other children in your community
How we did it:
Addie’s school gets a visit from Ms. Debbie, from our local library, every Friday. She reads a book and engages the students in the importance of literacy. It’s well known that reading to your child will help them with language acquisition and literacy skills (among many other benefits). To say that Addie loves books is an understatement. Books are a part of our daily life and our nighttime reading routine is what I look forward to the most.
I recall spending hours at the library when I was younger, searching for great books to read. It was an incredibly enjoyable and enriching experience. It got me thinking about other children in our community and their access to books. Would our local library have a need for books to add to their collection? I wasn’t sure, so I did some research. As it turns out, a lot of the books they have were acquired through donations. Another great thing they do with donated books is hold a used book fair every year. Proceeds from the sale of the used books go towards enhancing what the library has to offer the community.
Addie and I sat down and talked about the idea of going through her books and picking out ones to donate to the library. She enthusiastically started sorting through her bookcases!
She selected some of her favorite books as well as books that she felt were “baby books.” After we amassed a nice little pile we loaded ourselves into the car and took a trip down to the library. Addie was so excited! We were surprised when we walked in and Ms. Debbie was the librarian to help us! She was extremely appreciative of Addie’s thoughtfulness.
It’s important to give back to your community. Donating books to your local library provides children in the community access to free books. The sky’s the limit once you find a love of books!
Have fun donating your books!
