Simple Service: Snapshot Wisconsin

Do you sometimes wish that you could get out into nature, but your family’s special needs get in the way?  Well I have a great opportunity for you.  Snapshot Wisconsin is looking for volunteers to help classify animals typically seen in Wisconsin.  The best part is that really anyone can participate, regardless of any special needs.  In fact, you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your comfy couch to participate.  Yes, I know.  That’s kind of cheating.  But, this is also a way to give back just a little, so that sort of makes up for it.

How it Works:

The way this program works, is you access trail cam photos from an online database and answer questions about what you see.  They want to know what species of animal and how many the trail cam captured.  Don’t worry.  They know that sometimes it can be difficult to identify an animal.  That is okay.  They accept guesses too.  All answers help the experts make better decisions regarding Wisconsin’s wildlife.  And, you don’t even have to live in Wisconsin to get involved!

How Do I Get Signed Up?

Simply go to the Snapshot Wisconsin website, and sign up.  You can get started right away!  It really is that easy, and your whole family can get involved.  Because there are literally thousands of photos needing to be classified, you can spend as much time on the project as you would like.  There are no minimum quotas to meet either.  You get to decide when you volunteer your time, and you can review as many or as little photos as you wish.

Learning Opportunities

For homeschool families or families that just want to learn a little more, the Snapshot Wisconsin website also offers some lesson plans and activities.  You will find learning activities geared to grades K-12, as well as flashcards to test your animal classification skills.  The lesson plans are not just for teachers or adults.  In fact, your child can access them too!  What a fun way to incorporate nature into your homeschool!

Volunteer Hours

Many organizations require volunteer hours such as 4-H, Boy Scouts, The National Honor Society, etc.  This is a great way to get those hours in all the while doing something pretty fun.  If your family is like mine, you are busy.  It can be really difficult to find time to volunteer.  Because this is something you can literally do from a smartphone, it makes it really easy to get those hours.

Has your family has been looking for a way to get outdoors, and it just isn’t happening?  Why not bring the outdoors right into your living room?  Snapshot Wisconsin would love to have your family help them classify the animals of Wisconsin.  It’s easy to sign up, and you can actually feel good about spending hours on the internet.  Now the time you spend on your phone could actually be helping out a great cause.
