2016: Year in Review

2016. It's been a good year for Little Hands Can. Little hands have given almost 1,000 hours of service to help over 1,000 people, not to mention all the trees, animals, and plants served too. To make all that service happen, Little Hands Can teamed up with over 20 local and global non-profit organizations benefiting from the services rendered.

To all those that have attended our events or donated to make those events happen, let's take a look at all the good we did for this beautiful world and its inhabitants this year.

Community Events

Jan 30 we made 37 Valentines to deployed troops and 62 friendship bracelets for humanitarians in Haiti with the residents at Lone Oak Retirement Community.

Over spring break we tied blankets for Bags of Love and then got to tour their warehouse when we delivered the blankets.

May 21 Star Wars Service Party

July 13 and August 10 we held playground washes at city parks to get the playgrounds at Oakmont and Bond Lane Parks sparkly clean.

Oct 22 Pumpkin Party

Dec 13 Wrapping Giving Tree presents

In-Program

Little Hands Can taught service through hands-on activities to over 12 groups of children this year ranging from school classrooms to church youth groups to low-income housing kids' activities.

Kindness Camp

Little Hands Can had its first Kindness Camp! The kids filled their time with learning about and participating in service about each day's theme.

Afterschool

We partnered with BEST schools to give kids in 3 lowest-income Eugene elementary schools the chance to do service after school. In each session, the kids do different service projects each week then get to go on a fieldtrip to the Eugene Mission.

Happy Helpers

We started Happy Helpers, a storytime and service activity for babies-preschoolers, this fall. It's hosted at a local retirement community so the older residents can help those very little hands do service.

Nov 7 Happy Helpers we read stories about soldiers and then decorated pillowcases for combat hospitals and colored pages for deployed troops.

Ideas and Resources

We've provided you with 70 posts in 2016 full of ideas and resources for simple service you can do with your kids, spotlights of kids doing service in their communities, and event re-caps. See them here.

March 16 Treats to Fire Fighters

And it will only get better in 2017

We plan to continue having at least 2 community events each month. The Afterschool program through BEST schools continues to the end of the school year, as does Happy Helpers. Summer will bring Kindness Camp again. Throughout the year, we will go to as many in-program events as we feasibly can. And we'll continue to post ideas for simple service and spotlight awesome kids helping others here on our site.

Want to help? Attend our community events, spread the word to other Eugene/Springfield-area families, nominate a service-minded child to be spotlighted on our site, volunteer to help behind-the-scenes, or donate.
